Gov. Buni leads 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day commemoration in Yobe

Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

Governor Mai Mala Buni led Yobe State in commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Thursday at the Government House Event Centre in Damaturu.

The service paid tribute to military personnel, veterans, and legions who died defending the nation’s peace and unity. Interfaith prayers were offered for the fallen heroes, their families, and the nation.

Governor Buni also released white pigeons as a symbol of peace, a poignant gesture in the Northeast, a region deeply affected by insurgency.

Reflecting on the state’s history, Governor Buni noted, “Yobe is the second epicentre of the Boko Haram insurgency. This very location was once under their control. Today, we enjoy relative peace due to collective prayers, community cooperation, and the gallantry of our security agencies.”

He emphasised continued government support for the military and called for sustained public collaboration, stating, “Security is everybody’s business. We must all share information and synergies for lasting peace.”

In his remarks, Lt. Goji Birma, Chairman of the Nigeria Legion in Yobe State, praised Yobe government support as “perfect” and acknowledged the care provided to veterans.

He highlighted funding as the legion’s main challenge, noting reliance on annual emblem appeals and philanthropic donations.

Birma, who leads over 400 members, outlined plans to host quarterly events, starting with a recent Remembrance Day and followed by vocational training for widows, orphans, and the less privileged.
