Story from Sa’adatu Maina, Damaturu

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has said that the effect of climate change is a major area of concern to the government of the state.

The governor made this known on Tuesday when he received the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Head of North East Sub-Region, Mr Moncef Kartas, who paid him a courtesy visit at the government house, Damaturu.

Governor Buni said the state is faced with the twin challenge of desert encroachment and floods. It is also loosing sizeable part to desert encroachment, and also recording huge loss to yearly floods.

He called on the attention of the UNDP as partners to look into these two natural disasters with a view to explore avenues of checking the threats to safeguard the people and their means of livelihood.

“While assuring you of our commitment to this partnership, l wish to reassure you that Yobe State Government would continue to live up to its responsibilities for successful implementation of the partnership for the benefit of our people”, said Gov. Buni.

He commended the UNDP Head of North East Sub Region, Mr Moncef Kartas and his team for the result-oriented partnership between the UNDP, the Government of Japan and the Yobe State Government in the recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation process of the state’s communities, especially those affected by the unfortunate insurgency.
