Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has called on the Nigerian Army to reinforce values of discipline, loyalty, and patriotism among its personnel to strengthen the fight against terrorism and criminality.

The governor made the call on Monday in Damaturu while declaring open a two-day annual training conference for Army Imams and Ulamas, held at the Federal Polytechnic auditorium.

He was represented at the event by his Deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana.

Governor Buni stated that the conference was timely, given the nation’s current security challenges which require massive troop deployment.

He, however, expressed concern that prolonged exposure to conflict zones has led some soldiers to depend on hard drugs, an addiction many continue after returning to their barracks.

He emphasised the critical role of military clerics in combating this issue, stating that through guidance derived from Islamic teachings, Imams can drastically reduce these “ugly, forbidden habits” and instill courage in Muslim personnel.

Governor Buni also commended the Army for its sacrifices in restoring peace in Yobe State and reiterated his administration’s commitment to continuous collaboration with the military.

In a welcome address, the Chief of Army Staff, represented by Brigadier S.I Getso, Commander of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, said the conference aimed to enhance the spiritual well-being of soldiers, which is critical for operational effectiveness.
