He said, “We value and cherish traditional Tsangaya education as it is the oldest, but because of modernisation, we have to do our best to improve them to attain the highest standard.”

The Governor said that the students apart from learning how to memorise the Qur’an, will be introduced to English and arithmetic studies to learn western education.

He recalled saying, “UNICEF said we have 550 out of school children, but I said their number is higher than that because there are areas they didn’t visit, even in those areas, we have many out of school children that they didn’t count.

Mrs Amina Buba Haruna, Coordinator of BESDA at the Federal Ministry of Education, commended the Gombe State government for transforming the Almajiri system by giving them special recognition and changing their status through BESDA programmers.

The Guest Speaker at the occasion, Professor Bashir Galadanchi urged Tsangaya school owners to continue to embrace government policies and programmes aimed at developing the skills and capacity of their pupils towards the improvement of the standard of living.

Professor Bashir advised Quranic teachers and pupils to learn the skills they need to succeed in tomorrow’s competitive world by rethinking yesterday’s teaching practices.

The scholar urged the government and the society to support Qur’anic schools to enable them to excel in today’s society, even as he urged the government to provide social amenities to its citizenry.
