Gov. Sani Bello calls for govt support to boost agricultural production
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has called for the creation of special funds by the state and federal governments to support farmers with land preparation, fertilizer, and other agricultural needs.
The governor’s statement was issued in a press release signed by Mary Noel-Berje, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Niger State.
Governor Sani Bello made this plea during the inauguration of the Falcol Fertilizer operation, a partnership between the state government and the Niger State Fertilizer Company located in Zungeru.
Acknowledging the high costs associated with farming, including land preparation and the purchase of fertilizers, the governor emphasized that establishing special funds to assist farmers would enhance agricultural production in Nigeria. This, in turn, would help lower the prices of food items.
The governor expressed his satisfaction that the fertilizer company had become operational after years of having the infrastructure without the necessary machinery.
He extended his gratitude to the management of J-Marine for collaborating with the Niger State Government and urged them to prioritize the local farming community.
“As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), I have requested that the company allocate at least 10% of their fertilizer to farmers in the local community at cost price,” Governor Sani Bello stated.
“Additionally, I advised them to establish a sales shop outside the facility to cater to nearby farmers who purchase fertilizer in smaller quantities, as many of them are subsistence farmers.”
The governor recognized the importance of fertilizer as a crucial component in agricultural production, underscoring the value that the facility would bring to farmers.
He emphasized the need for sustained government support for agriculture in the state but expressed concern about certain politicians who exploit subsidized fertilizer meant for farmers to make personal gains.
“Fertilizer is a critical component in agricultural production. Unfortunately, I have noticed that some politicians have been abusing the government’s efforts to provide affordable fertilizer by using it as a means to make money,” he lamented.
Mr. Shola Thomas, the Marketing Manager of the company, disclosed that the plant is currently producing 100 tons of fertilizer per day.
He assured that the company is ready to meet the farmers’ demands by increasing fertilizer supply in the market and transforming Niger State into an agricultural investment hub.
He expressed gratitude to the governor and the state government for their support, which facilitated the success of the partnership.
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello also inaugurated the Shango road network, spanning 3 kilometers, and the Maitumbi township road network, spanning 2.7 kilometers, in Minna.
These road projects were initiated to improve transportation infrastructure and facilitate easier movement within the area.
