Governor’s aide bags 3 years jail term for assault
A Bayelsa State High Court has sentenced Prudent Oguruguru, the Senior Special Assistant on General Duties to Governor Douye Diri, to three years in prison on charges of conspiracy to commit assault and assault occasioning harm.
The conviction stemmed from an incident on February 20, 2024, when Oguruguru assaulted Ubong Effiong Ubek, leaving him unconscious in Agudama-Epie. He faced a five-count charge, including conspiracy, attempted murder, assault occasioning harm, serious assault, and malicious damage.
During the trial, Oguruguru pleaded not guilty to all charges. The prosecution presented six witnesses and seven exhibits to build its case.
In his ruling, Justice I.A. Orukari determined that the prosecution had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the charges of attempted murder, serious assault, and malicious damage (Counts 2, 4, and 5). However, the court found sufficient evidence to convict Oguruguru on Counts 1 and 3.
The judge sentenced Oguruguru to three years in prison for each count, with the sentences to run concurrently. Both sentences included an option of a N250,000 fine for each count.

In an emotional plea for leniency, Oguruguru told the court, “I am the sole provider for my young family and aged mother.”
Justice Orukari upheld the punishment, emphasising the need for accountability.
