Gov’s wives vow to sustain fight against gender-based violence
The wives of Nigerian governors have called for the implementation of a six-month paid maternity leave across the nation, aiming to enhance maternity and child welfare.
The announcement came on Thursday night after a meeting of the Forum of Governors’ Wives held in Abakaliki.
In a communique delivered by Professor Olufolake Abdulrazaq, Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum and wife of the Kwara State Governor, the women also renewed their commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence in their respective states.
“The forum affirms its unwavering resolve to keep up the fight against sexual and gender-based violence in their various states,” the communique declared.
Additionally, the governors’ wives expressed their collective support for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) Initiative, pledging sustained advocacy for the uptake of the HPV vaccine to protect girls’ health.

The communique further outlined plans for targeted sensitization efforts, focusing on wives of local government chairmen to enhance awareness of the HPV vaccine and cancer prevention.
“The First Ladies have pledged to vigorously advocate for adopting six months of paid maternity leave, engaging executive governors and state legislators to promote this policy across all states,” Abdulrazaq stated.
The meeting underscored the commitment of these leaders to drive progress, collaboration, and development in their states and beyond.
