Govt College Maiduguri alumnus documents 100 years of alma mater

An ex-student of Government College Maiduguri, Muhammad Abdullahi Shettima, is writing a book, highlighting memorable times of his alma mater the then Yerwa Provincial School (1915 to 1930) 100 years after its inception.

The book titled “100 Years of Blazing a Trail: From Yerwa Provincial School to Government College Maiduguri” is co-authored by Ali Muhammad and will be ready in the first quarter of 2023.

Shettima said the book will be presented in the form of a yearbook that will reconnect schoolmates of the then Yerwa Provincial School (Government College Maiduguri) and showcase legacy through the diverse talents trained by the institution nationwide.

Speaking to Neptune Prime in Abuja, Shettima said the book will be presented in parts, the first will centre on the brief chronological history of the then Yerwa Provincial School (1915 to 1930) which subsequently metamorphosed into the famous Borno Middle School (1930 to 1955), which in turn, developed into the Borno Provincial Secondary School (1955 to 1966).

The author said the book will discuss the transformation of the school from the status of a Provincial Secondary School to being a Government Secondary School and ultimately into a full-fledged Government College Maiduguri.

A civil servant with the Public Complaints Commission (PCC), Muhammad Abdullahi Shettima, said he derives inspiration as a proud alumni and from his father and four brothers who are all alumni of the college.

Shettima said the book also includes the history of the headmasters/principals as well as some teachers and students who witnessed the series of changes the institution went through at different times.

“It will also explore the hostel life of the students and the regime of discipline predominantly administered by fellow students charged with supervisory responsibilities as prefects, the Head Boy, a Senior and a Junior Prefect for each of the four Houses (then known as Compounds – Waziriri, Limanti, Talbari, and Kaigamari),” Shettima said.

Mohammed Abdullah Shettima was born in Yerwa (Maiduguri). He had his early education at the Bluemont Elementary School (Kindergarten) Manhattan, Kansas,
USA. He completed his primary education at the Shehu Garbai School Maiduguri and proceeded to Government College Maiduguri.

In 2006, Abdullahi went to the University of Maiduguri where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science in 2010 and later obtained Masters Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy (MIAD) in 2014 at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
