Groups laud Gombe gov’t for signing PPP with Malaysian university

Reactions have continued to trail the recent Public-Private Partnership (PPP) signed by the government of Gombe state with the Lincoln University College of Malaysia to take over the state’s University of Science and Technology, Kumo, located in Akko local government area of the state and man it for a time period of 30 years.

A coalition of Akko community groups on Monday backed the government’s decision oping that the partnership would make the institution more functional and prosperous.

Spokesperson of the coalition, Khalid Kumo, while addressing journalists on the development said that the university which was created by the immediate past administration did not get proper funding from the ex-governor after the establishment adding that the decision to hand it over to the Malaysian university by the incumbent governor was a good step in the right direction.

According to him, the creation of the new university was even needless saying the state government could not concurrently run two state universities due to paucity of funds.

“It is of importance for our people to understand that public-private partnership in the area of education which is one of the many ways the Nigerian government has adopted to address the seemingly unending challenges of education nationwide in its 2020 agenda will increase equity in education systems and improve education quality.

“In addition, such arrangements can make service delivery effective and expand possibilities for financing the education sector with less loads of bills on the Gombe state government in our own case”, he opined.
