Gunmen suspected to be ESN/IPOB members kill four US Embassy officials in Anambra

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN)/the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) attacked a vehicle carrying United States Embassy officials in Anambra State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in the Amiyi/Eke Ochuche communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The assailants ambushed the vehicle, instantly killing four staff members of the US Embassy.

The motive behind the attack is still unknown.

Witnesses reported that the attackers created panic when they invaded the area where residents were gathered, waiting to receive medical treatment from UNICEF officials.

According to a source, the victims included both white and black officials who were part of a medical outreach program in the rural riverine areas.

Some of the surviving staff members sustained injuries while managing to escape with the vehicle, which had UNICEF markings.

Responding to inquiries, the spokesperson for the Anambra Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and provided additional details.

He stated that joint security forces had launched a rescue operation in Ogbaru LGA following the attack on the US Consulate convoy.

Tragically, two police officers and two staff members of the Consulate were killed, with their bodies and vehicles set ablaze by the assailants.

Ikenga also revealed that the attackers had abducted two police operatives and the driver of the second vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Notably, no US citizens were present in the convoy during the attack.

The police spokesperson expressed regret that the convoy entered the state without informing local authorities or security agencies.

He assured the public that efforts to combat the insurgents in the state would persist until security stability is fully restored. The police will communicate further details as they emerge.
