Iran defies U.S. pressure, vows to continue uranium enrichment even if It leads to war

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has declared that Tehran will continue its uranium enrichment programme regardless of the risk of military conflict, escalating tensions amid stalled nuclear diplomacy with the United States and its allies.

Speaking amid renewed indirect talks between Iranian and U.S. officials, Araghchi said uranium enrichment is a non-negotiable sovereign right, stressing that Iran will not abandon the programme “even if war is imposed.” He added that Iran has already paid a heavy economic and political price for its nuclear activities and will not bow to external pressure.

The remarks come as Washington increases its military presence in the Middle East and warns Tehran against advancing its nuclear capabilities. U.S. officials argue that Iran’s enrichment levels raise proliferation concerns, while Iran maintains its programme is for peaceful purposes and permitted under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, diplomatic efforts continue through intermediaries, particularly in Oman. However, enrichment remains the central sticking point, with Iran insisting on its right to maintain the programme and the U.S. demanding significant limitations.

Analysts warn that the hardline stance from Tehran signals a deepening standoff that could undermine prospects for reviving a nuclear agreement and further destabilise the region if diplomacy fails.
