Hamas agrees to ceasefire deal with Israel
Hamas has reportedly agreed to the terms of a ceasefire deal with Israel, following the ongoing conflict that began after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack.
During the attack, many hostages were taken by Hamas, and despite some releases, the crisis has led to the deaths of an estimated 46,000 Palestinians. More than 1,000 Israelis were also killed in the assault.
On Wednesday, both Israeli and Palestinian officials confirmed that Hamas had verbally agreed to a deal that would lead to the release of hostages and a cessation of fighting in Gaza. The deal could be announced soon, though Hamas has not yet provided a written response, according to reports from multiple media outlets, including Reuters and AFP.
The agreement is expected to be implemented in phases, with the first phase involving the release of 33 hostages and the simultaneous release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. This phase could begin on Sunday.
It was also reported that negotiations for a second phase, which would aim to end the war, would start after the first 16 days of the ceasefire.
This deal would bring the first significant break from the violence in Gaza in over a year and would allow Palestinian civilians to return to northern Gaza.
Additionally, humanitarian aid would be allowed to flow into the strip, alleviating the severe conditions faced by residents.
Hamas has stated that it consulted with allied groups before agreeing to the deal and emphasized its responsibility to protect the people of Gaza.
