South Africa disconnects power to Nigeria’s high commission over alleged outstanding bills
South African authorities have cut electricity supply to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria over what was described as unpaid utility bills, sparking diplomatic attention between both countries.
Reports indicate that officials of the local power utility disconnected electricity to the Nigerian mission after repeated demands for settlement of outstanding charges were allegedly ignored. The action reportedly affected activities at the High Commission, forcing staff to rely on alternative power sources to carry out official duties.
Reacting to the development, sources within Nigeria’s diplomatic circles confirmed the disconnection but said efforts were already underway to resolve the issue. The sources explained that the matter stemmed from billing disputes and administrative delays rather than a deliberate refusal to pay.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is said to be engaging South African authorities and the utility provider to restore power and prevent a recurrence. Officials stressed that the incident should not be interpreted as a breakdown in diplomatic relations between both countries, noting that Nigeria and South Africa maintain strong bilateral ties.

The incident has, however, drawn public attention, with calls for improved funding and prompt settlement of obligations at Nigeria’s foreign missions to avoid reputational damage.
