House of Reps to investigate funds used on postponed 2023 census

The House of Representatives has announced its decision to conduct an investigation into the funds allocated for the postponed 2023 population and housing census by the National Population Commission (NPC).

The resolution was made on Wednesday after Honourable Dominic Okafor raised concerns over the 200 billion naira already spent on the census. However, the lawmakers expressed disagreement on conducting the census this year due to prevailing security challenges.

President Muhammadu Buhari had previously approved the postponement of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, which was originally scheduled for May 3 to 7. The new date for the census will be determined by the incoming administration.

Former President Buhari had granted the approval for the postponement after a meeting with members of the Federal Executive Council, the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwarra, and his team.

By initiating this investigation, the House of Representatives aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilization of funds designated for the census.
