Househelp kills employer’s seven-year-old daughter, commits suicide in Rivers

Story by Okafor Vivian

A tragic incident unfolded in Rivers State on Thursday after a househelp allegedly stabbed her employer’s seven-year-old daughter to death before taking her own life.

The heartbreaking event occurred inside the family’s residence in the Aluu axis of Ikwerre Local Government Area. Residents said the employer had stepped out briefly, leaving the child in the care of the househelp.

According to preliminary reports, neighbours rushed into the compound after hearing repeated screams but arrived to find the young girl in a pool of blood. The househelp was later discovered dead in another section of the house, having reportedly ingested a poisonous substance after the attack.

Police authorities in Rivers State confirmed the incident and said investigations have begun to uncover the motive behind the act. The spokesman for the command noted that officers have cordoned off the building and collected evidence for further analysis.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread concern over the increasing reports of violence involving domestic workers across the country. Many residents of the area have called for stricter background checks and better regulation of domestic staff employment.

The deceased child’s body has been deposited in a mortuary, while the remains of the househelp have also been evacuated by the police.
