In order to protect themselves from the affliction of cancer, doctors have advised women to examine both their breasts and armpits every year.

In addition to this, it was also recommended that women should also perform Breast Examination (BE) every month especially those over the age of 40.

It is also recommended that women should biennially conduct mammogram (breast x-ray) and Breast ultrasound as another means to determine the nature of abnormal breast tissue seen on a mammogram.

Breast Self-Exam is also very important and should commence immediately you have your first period.

If your breasts is regularly examined you will become more alert if there is a change and you are more likely to notice changes (masses, lumps or nipple discharge) which could be early signs of cancer.

It is best to do your Breast Self-Examination (BSE) about a week after your period, when your breasts are not swollen or tender. If you see or feel a change in your breasts, see your doctor immediately.

If your doctor says not to worry and you still feel something is not right, then your doctor should refer you to a breast specialist.
