Husband pours hot water on nursing wife’s breast in Enugu

A man, identified as Mr Emmanuel Opoku, residing at the Akwuke Area of Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, has allegedly poured hot water on his breastfeeding wife’s breasts.

Reports gathered that as the nursing mother prepared pap for the three-month-old baby, he accosted her, took the hot water and poured it on her breasts. Mrs Opoku has been in excruciating pains as she stated that her breasts bled profusely whenever she tried to breastfeed the baby.

The suspect, said to be currently in police custody, was in the habit of physically and verbally abusing the wife, including denying her and the children necessities. It was also said that he had a penchant for always torturing her even without provocation.

According to account by a gender rights group, Women Aids Collectives (WACOL), the recent incident happened when she asked him for money to prepare food for the family, which he vehemently refused to provide.

The accused was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm on his wife, who is nursing a child at the time of the incident.

According to the charge sheet, No: MES/ 226 c/ 20, Mr Opoku unlawfully poured hot water on Mrs Opoku’s two breasts, which caused her grievous bodily harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 290 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.

It was gathered that the legal team of WACOL and other pros Bono lawyers, led by WACOL’s Head of Legal Unit, Mrs Ijeoma Ezeude, Onyeonagu and Dr Nick Agbo, worked in conjunction with the police prosecutor, Inspector Innocent Otibe, to vehemently oppose the bail application.

The Magistrate, who refused the bail application on the ground of public interest remanded the man who poured water on his wife’s breasts in Enugu police custody.
