IDF Chief warns Netanyahu over Gaza plan, creating a “trap”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir had a tense disagreement over war strategy during a recent meeting, according to a report from Israeli public broadcaster Kan. Zamir reportedly warned Netanyahu that his plan for a full-scale occupation of Gaza could lead Israel into a “trap.”
The clash highlights deep divisions within Israel’s leadership. Netanyahu is said to favor a comprehensive military takeover of Gaza, a move that would reverse Israel’s 2005 withdrawal and give the country direct control over the entire territory.
This plan, Al Jazeera reports, aligns with Netanyahu’s goals of defeating Hamas, freeing hostages, and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a security threat. However, it risks worsening the humanitarian crisis and endangering the lives of captives.

In contrast, Zamir is reportedly advocating for a more measured and gradual escalation that would allow for a quick reversal if ceasefire talks resume. He is said to be cautioning against the potential pitfalls of a full occupation.
The tension between the two leaders reportedly reached a boiling point during the meeting. When speculation arose that Zamir might resign if his plan was overruled, Netanyahu snapped at him, “Don’t threaten to resign in the media.”
Israeli media reports indicate that Zamir’s future is uncertain if Netanyahu moves forward with his plan. Despite the disagreement, Netanyahu’s office has stated that the Israeli Defense Forces are ready to implement any decision made by the political-security cabinet.
