IGP changes Imo police commissioner over social media allegations
In preparation for the off-season governorship elections in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi states on November 11, 2023, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Muhammad Barde.
Addressing the situation during an interview on Channels Television’s People’s Townhall on Election Security, the IGP acknowledged the allegations made on social media against the Commissioner of Police in Imo State. He stated, “For this election, we are changing the commissioner of police in Imo.”

The decision to redeploy the commissioner comes after widespread outrage from Organised Labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress, who accused the commissioner of complicity in the recent attack on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
Additionally, Organised Labour handed the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to replace the police commissioner, while also placing blame on Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking re-election, for the attack on Ajaero.
However, Governor Uzodimma has denied any involvement in the incident.
The IGP assured the public that the police have taken necessary measures to address all threats during the elections in the three states.
He mentioned that the mopping up of arms will be conducted periodically before, during, and after the polls.
Egbetokun emphasized that the police will respond appropriately to vote buying and other electoral offenses in accordance with the provisions of the electoral laws.
He made it clear that individuals found engaging in vote buying will face appropriate prosecution, and the allowances of policemen will be paid promptly and as scheduled.
