Immigration officer suspended on drug trafficking charges
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended Akomolafe Gbenga Michael, an officer at Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, over multiple drug trafficking charges.
In a Wednesday statement from Abuja, NIS spokesman DCI Kenneth Udo confirmed the suspension and revealed that the officer is facing arraignment before a Federal High Court in Lagos.
“The Service wishes to inform the public that the officer in question has been subjected to internal processes and suspended following the allegation of his involvement in the case in May 2024,” Udo stated.
He added that the NIS fully supports the court proceedings to determine Michael’s level of culpability.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service awaits the court’s judgment before making further comments to avoid subjudice,” Udo said.
The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to high standards of service delivery, discipline, and zero tolerance for criminal activities.
“The Service will not hesitate to sanction any officer whose conduct contradicts these ideals,” Udo emphasized.
