Nigeria deports 828 illegal immigrants, enhances border security
The Federal Government deported 828 illegal immigrants in 2024 as part of its intensified efforts to address irregular migration and strengthen national security.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, shared this information during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday. He highlighted the government’s recent achievements, noting that 137 victims of human trafficking were intercepted in the past year, and in 2024 alone, 828 foreign nationals were repatriated by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
As part of ongoing reforms, the government has taken steps to modernize border operations and immigration systems. These include integrating Nigerian passports into the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s Public Key Directory, enabling seamless global verification, and creating a centralised Visa Approval Centre in Abuja to streamline visa processing.

To support these initiatives, the country has built Nigeria’s largest data centre, with a capacity of 8.3 petabytes, and introduced solar-powered infrastructure to ensure continuous operations. A new Command and Control Centre also provides real-time monitoring of all land and air entry points, enhancing surveillance capabilities.
Additionally, the Minister noted that the NIS cleared a backlog of 200,000 passport applications within three weeks in 2023 and issued 1,836,533 passports in 2024.
