Immigration Service unveils single-use emergency passport for Nigerians abroad
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to introduce a new Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) to replace the existing Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) for Nigerians stranded abroad.
Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, disclosed this during the Joint Thematic Meeting of the Khartoum, Rabat, and Niamey Processes, co-hosted by Nigeria and the Government of France.
She said the initiative is part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening identity management and border governance in line with international standards.

According to Nandap, the STEP will serve as a secure and verifiable temporary travel document for Nigerians whose passports have expired, been lost, or stolen, allowing them to return home safely.
“The forthcoming Single Travel Emergency Passport will enable Nigerians abroad to return home in a safe, secure, and verifiable manner,” she stated, noting that the passport would be valid for one-time entry into Nigeria and issued at designated embassies and consulates.
Nandap also emphasized that the reform aligns with the NIS’s commitment to efficient service delivery and stronger identity protection.
In her keynote address titled “Insights on Prevention and Protection as Strategic Pillars to Effective Law Enforcement and Prosecution Responses,” the Immigration Chief highlighted broader efforts to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking through improved border governance, capacity building, and international collaboration.

She reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional and global migration frameworks and pledged that the NIS will continue to align its policies with global standards to ensure safe, orderly, and regular migration.
