Imo State Govt raises minimum wage to N40,000 in response to subsidy removal

The Imo State Government has taken steps to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal by increasing the minimum wage of workers in the state to N40,000.

Governor Hope Uzodimma announced this during a strategic stakeholders meeting held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, on Saturday.

Additionally, the government plans to provide a soft loan of N5 billion to farmers to enhance their productivity.

Governor Uzodimma expressed his concern for the welfare of the people, especially those with low incomes, who have been significantly affected by the removal of fuel subsidy.

To address this, he outlined several measures aimed at alleviating the suffering experienced across various sectors in Imo State.

“I have closely observed the situation our people have been facing since the removal of fuel subsidy was announced. I am deeply concerned by what I have witnessed, particularly the hardship faced by low-income earners. I empathize with their plight, which is why I have developed several initiatives to mitigate the impact,” stated the governor.

“To begin with, there will be an immediate increase in salaries and wages for workers in the state. The minimum wage will now be raised to N40,000, with discretionary and consequential adjustments made for other salary levels.”

On May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu removed subsidy payments on petrol during his inauguration, resulting in a significant spike in the pump price from N184 to over N500 per litre.

By implementing these measures, the Imo State Government aims to alleviate the economic burden on its citizens and support farmers in enhancing their productivity.
