Ekiti Bank Robbery: Armed men kill three, steal millions in broad daylight

Story from Fatima Adamu, Abuja

In a shocking turn of events, three individuals lost their lives during a brazen bank robbery in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The robbers, numbering around 20, attacked both Wema Bank and Access Bank in separate locations within the town, using dynamite to break down the entrance doors in broad daylight.

The incident occurred around 4pm and witnesses reported that the robbers moved freely around the town on motorcycles and a black vehicle, armed with guns and dropping dynamites to scare residents.

They also attempted to attack the Amotekun Corps office in the area, shooting some operatives before escaping.

The robbers were reported to have carted away a large sum of money from the banks and attempted to escape through the Ado-Akure Road but were forced to make a U-turn due to the presence of a military checkpoint. They then fled through the Ise-Ekiti Road.

Many residents who work outside the town were unable to return home during the robbery, while those nearby stayed indoors for safety.

The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Alagbado, expressed shock at the incident, describing it as unfortunate and noting that the robbers operated unhindered for several minutes despite the presence of military checkpoints and a police area command in the town.

At the time of filing this report, the police spokesperson in Ekiti State, DSP Sunday Abutu, could not be reached for comment.
