Insecurity: Nigerian Gov’t orders closure of FGC Kwali, tightens security in Unity Colleges

The Federal Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate closure of one of its colleges, the Federal Government College Kwali, located in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

This was disclosed in a press release by the Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben. Bem Goong.

Adamu Adamu who gave the directive in the early hours of Monday morning said the closure became necessary following a security breach on Sheda and Lambata Villages, suburbs of Kwali Area Council which also threatened FGC Kwali.

Adamu also directed that arrangements should be made for final year students to conclude their NECO examinations.

The Minister has also directed Principals of Unity Colleges across the country to liaise with security agencies within their jurisdictions to forestall any security breaches in our schools.

It could be recalled that in the late hours of Sunday, unconfirmed reports trended on social media indicating that there were heavy shootings in Federal Government Colleges (FGCs) Kwali, Abuja, and parents were rushing to the school to ascertain the safety of their children and possibly return home with them until calm is restored.

While some schools were asked to vacate latest on Wednesday, some other schools disseminated messages to parents on Sunday asking them not to fail to come to pick up their children on Monday, unfailingly, perhaps, due to rising fear, anxiety and threat.

It was gathered that the decision was therein a result of rising insecurity and threat to the lives, security and wellbeing of the students.
