Israel’s Military Struggles: Over 50,000 troops fail to capture a single village in Lebanon
The discourse surrounding the ongoing war in Lebanon is growing increasingly critical, with many within the Israeli establishment questioning the effectiveness of the occupation army.
Despite claims of “significant achievements” in targeting Hezbollah’s leadership and infrastructure, there is mounting pressure for the government to pursue a political settlement.
Concerns are rising about Hezbollah’s potential recovery and its capability to launch strikes that could undermine Israeli advancements and plunge the nation deeper into the Lebanese conflict.
Orna Mizrahi from the Institute for National Security Studies has advocated for a ceasefire that incorporates necessary changes to enhance security along the border while ensuring Israel retains the ability to act if Resolution 1701 is not upheld.

Mizrahi stresses the importance of maintaining an international presence, particularly UNIFIL forces, until alternative solutions can be found. She also calls for the Lebanese army’s deployment to be contingent upon strict monitoring to prevent Hezbollah’s military presence in southern Lebanon.
Yossi Yehoshua, writing for Yedioth Ahronoth, cites a senior army officer asserting that the occupation army is expanding its operations in crucial areas to restore security.
However, the officer warns that occupying more villages will not alter the outcome unless a sustainable agreement is reached. The aim is to compel Hezbollah, the Lebanese government, and international mediators to accept terms favourable to Israel.
Despite deploying over 50,000 soldiers—three times the number involved in the 2006 conflict—Israeli forces have struggled to secure even a single village in southern Lebanon. This operational setback has been attributed to Hezbollah’s adept use of advanced tactics, which involve precise targeting of Israeli vehicles and soldiers. Furthermore, the Israeli Air Force has faced challenges engaging hidden Hezbollah positions in rugged terrain, often resorting to strikes against civilian infrastructure instead.
In an interview, reserve Colonel Jack Neriah highlighted that Hezbollah’s fighters allow Israeli troops to advance, setting the stage for ambushes, creating significant risks for elite forces like Golani. He warned that any Israeli advance could lead to heavy casualties, potentially surpassing the death toll of previous conflicts.
In “Israel Today,” journalist Yoav Limor outlines Israel’s conditions for a potential ceasefire, including the full enforcement of Resolution 1701, the deployment of robust Lebanese forces, and unrestricted military action against Hezbollah.
Limor notes that while Israeli officials see no merit in offering concessions to Hezbollah, continuing hostilities could result in grave consequences, including increased fatalities, diminished international legitimacy, and prolonged disruption for residents in northern Israel.
