‘It was necessary,’ again Tinubu defends subsidy removal
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his stance on the removal of fuel subsidies, describing the decision as an essential step to secure the country’s economic stability and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Enugu on Saturday, Tinubu justified the subsidy removal, which was implemented during his inauguration in May 2023. The decision, though controversial, led to a significant increase in fuel prices and widespread public backlash.
“This house, Nigeria, we must build to satisfy our immediate needs and prepare for tomorrow. The removal of the fuel subsidy was necessary,” he remarked.
“You cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they are born.”
Acknowledging the criticisms, Tinubu said he anticipated the resistance but expressed confidence in his ability to lead and assemble a capable team to rebuild Nigeria.
The President also urged Nigerians to adopt a positive outlook and demonstrate patriotism.

“It is our country. We have to work really hard for it; to build a nation that we can be proud of. Change the narrative. Negative comments about Nigeria? I’m not taking that! I’m very proud of Nigeria. You all should be proud of Nigeria,” he declared.
During his working visit to Enugu State, Tinubu was received by Governor Peter Mbah and other dignitaries. The President commissioned several landmark projects, including:
The Enugu International Conference Centre, a multi-auditorium, multi-functional facility.
150 patrol vehicles equipped with AI-enabled surveillance cameras.
The removal of subsidies has sparked protests, with critics claiming it has exacerbated economic hardships for ordinary Nigerians. Despite this, Tinubu insists the policy was unavoidable to prevent national bankruptcy and ensure sustainable growth.
