Kano’s cow milk market booms with daily sales exceeding ₦200 million
Kano State’s Fagge Local Government Area has become a thriving hub for cow milk trade, with daily sales now surpassing ₦200 million. This remarkable development has been attributed to the interventions of the Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), supported by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
Speaking to reporters during a New Year briefing in Kano, the Chairman of the Cow Milk Marketers Association, Muhammad Ahmad Lawan Allarama, expressed delight over the progress made in the industry.
“The milk industry in Kano, particularly in Fagge, is now operating at international standards,” he stated.
The KSADP, in collaboration with the IsDB, has donated over 100 generating sets, grinding, and blending machines to the association’s 200 members, enhancing storage systems and reducing spoilage.
Allarama revealed that 40 Milk Collection Centres, fully equipped and completed under the KSADP initiative, are yet to be operational.
“If these centres start functioning, we can export our products to international markets in a few months,” he said.
He also stressed the need for cold storage facilities, pointing out that milk spoilage due to inadequate storage remains a significant challenge.

The association’s Secretary, Sunusi Abdullahi Sunusi, disclosed that over 2 million litres of cow milk are transported daily across the northern region.
To sustain this momentum, he urged for:
Cooling trailers to preserve milk during transportation, Solar-powered energy solutions, Water and sanitation facilities, Cash grants and loans to further expand the market.
“With over 20,000 members in Kano, these interventions will elevate our industry and solidify Kano’s position as a dairy hub,” Sunusi stated.
