Jigawa Commissioner suspended over alleged misappropriation of Ramadan feeding funds

Jigawa State’s Commissioner for Commerce, Alhaji Aminu Kanta, has been suspended by Governor Malam Umar Namadi over accusations of misusing funds designated for the Ramadan Iftar Feeding Programme in Babura local government area.

The suspension, effective immediately, was announced in a press release issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, and distributed to the press in Dutse, the state capital, on Friday.

The statement clarified that the suspension would remain in place pending the outcome of an investigative committee established by the governor to investigate the allegations.

Governor Namadi’s decision to suspend the commissioner underscores his commitment to ensuring financial transparency and responsible management of public funds, as stated in the press release.

The Ramadan Iftar Feeding Programme, for which N2.8 billion was allocated by the State Executive Council (SEC), aimed to provide meals across all 27 local government areas of the state.

The initiative included the establishment of 600 centers with at least two feeding points in each political ward, along with designated centers at higher institutions.

Each center was expected to serve a minimum of 300 people daily throughout the Ramadan period.
