Judiciary workers shut down court over ₦75,000 wage dispute
Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Benue State chapter, have taken to direct action by locking the gates of the state High Court in Makurdi.
This protest stems from the state government’s failure to implement the newly agreed ₦75,000 minimum wage for its workers.
According to Jooli David, the Assistant Secretary of the union, the protest follows the union’s announcement of an indefinite strike due to the non-payment of the new wage, despite the state government having initiated its implementation for other workers in the state starting in late November.
The union’s actions have resulted in the barricading of the High Court’s gates, preventing access to the premises. This strike action underlines the growing frustration within the judiciary staff, who are now demanding that the government extend the newly approved wage to them as promised.
The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Benue State chapter, announced that it was following the directive from its national body and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to initiate an indefinite strike starting from December 6, in protest of the non-implementation of the new ₦75,000 minimum wage. The union had previously sent a letter to the state governor titled “Notification of Indefinite Strike Action Over Non-Implementation of New Minimum Wage,” which directed all judiciary staff across the state to withdraw their services and remain at home until further notice from the union’s state branch.
Jooli David, the Assistant Secretary of the union, mentioned that the leadership of the union was scheduled to meet with the Head of Service later in the day to discuss the matter.
When approached for a comment, Terungwa Igbe, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, confirmed that the union was aware of the strike but declined to provide details on the specific reasons for the action.
