Kano government to pay N30 billion compensation to owners of demolished shops
In a landmark ruling, a Federal High Court in Kano has ordered the Kano State Government to pay a whopping sum of N30 billion in compensation to the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners. The court deemed the demolition of the shops as unlawful, as it did not follow the due processes laid down by law.
Justice Simon Amobeda, who presided over the case, strongly condemned the actions of Governor Abba Yusuf and his government, stating that their actions were both barbaric and unconstitutional. The court’s decision highlights the importance of upholding the rights of individuals and ensuring that proper procedures are followed.
Governor Yusuf had ordered the demolition of various shops, malls, and even a hotel, claiming that they violated Kano’s master plan. The demolition also included the iconic “Tumbin Giwa” roundabout, which has been a symbol of Kano state’s identity in the media and entertainment industry.

The demolished structures include a three-storey complex with 90 shops near the Nasarawa GRA, the three-star Daula Hotel reconstructed under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement, a building at the Hajj Camp, and several shops at the Kantin Kwari textile market. Additionally, shops near Sani Abacha Stadium at Kofar Mata, GSS Kofar Nasarawa, GGSS Dukawuya, and Goron Dutse were also demolished.
