Kano man confesses to kidnapping neighbour’s 18-month-old daughter

Operatives of Kano State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old suspect, Zakariyya Muhammad, 16 hours after he kidnapped his neighbour’s 18-month-old baby.

The arrest was made known in a statement by the Police Command’s spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on Tuesday.

He said the arrest followed sustained efforts and intelligence-led technical operations by the police.

The police announced on Tuesday that the command received a report on July 4, 2024, from a resident of Sabuwar Gandu Kwarin Barka Quarters Kano, regarding his daughter, Amina, being kidnapped and that he had received a call from an unknown person demanding a ransom of N2 million for her release.

Upon receiving the report, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Garba, mobilised an anti-kidnapping squad led by SP Aliyu Auwal. The team was instructed to rescue the victim within 24 hours and also ensure the arrest of the suspect.

The victim was found in an isolated area in the neighbourhood and was taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where she was examined, found healthy, and discharged.

Kiyawa urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with the police to create a safer environment, emphasising that such criminal acts would not be tolerated.

He pledged that the command would use all available resources to prevent criminal activities and bring perpetrators to justice.

In a related development, the Kano State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly vandalising transformer fittings and an electric pole.
