Kano school to partner NGO in curbing Gender-Based Violence

Story from Shafa’atu DAUDA, Kano

The management of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education Kano has expressed readiness to partner with a non-governmental organisation, Centre Information Technology and Development (CITAD), in tackling the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), especially against women and girls.

This was disclosed when the school’s provost, Dr Yahaya Isah Bunkure, received a delegation of CITAD at his office during an advocacy visit.

Dr Yahaya Bunkure said that ignorance remains one of the major reasons behind the escalating rate of GBV, especially violence directed at women and girls in society.

He added that his college has the department of guidance and counselling which is headed by a female and the sole responsibility of the department is working with students and parents in helping, and guiding students’ academic, behavioural and social growth.

Bunkure further said that the college has deepened efforts by engaging critical stakeholders in fighting sexual and gender-based violence in an academic environment.

“I commend the CITAD for choosing us as a worthy partner in fighting sexual and gender-based violence.”

He also described as important the involvement of women in solving problems with regard to gender-based violence in society.

On her part, the gender officer of the centre, Zainab Aminu, revealed that CITAD is worried about the rate of cases concerning sexual violence occurring and that is why the centre started a campaign against the menace with support from the Ford Foundation.

She added that the CITAD decided to partner with the higher institutions and other learning environments having realised its presence and spread will be essential in reaching out to Kano state residents.

Aminu stressed that CITAD will be partnering with relevant stakeholders such as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Nigerian Police, Hisba Board, State Ministry of Education, Traditional rulers and other CSOs and NGOs to bring the needed change regarding gender-based violence in Kano State.
