Kano State gov’t may reconstitute board of films and censorship

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is planning to reconstitute the management of Kano State Films and Censorship Board, to replace the current one which seems no longer popular with members of Kannywood.

When the governor appointed Afakallah, the former Chairman of Arewa Film Makers, to head the agency, he did so to compensate members of Kannywood who campaigned for him and President Buhari during the 2015 and 2019 elections. But even though Afakallah is from Kannywood, some of his policies have created enmity for the state government because, under him, many Kannywood actors and actresses, namely: Sani Danja, Naziru Ahmad, Sadiq Zazzabi, Oscar 442, Salisu Officer, Adam A. Zango were sent to detention or prison using his exalted office.

At the moment, the majority of Kannywood stakeholders are no longer comfortable with the APC administration in the state. This is according to some of them that spoke with our correspondent. These include: Abba Almustapha, Mustapha Musty, Sadiq Zazzabi, Maryam Jankune, Sani Danja and Yakubu Muhammed, Hamisu Iyantama, and most leading actors and actresses in Kannywood and this has given the state government a cause for worry as it may affect the chances of APC in the state in 2023.

The state government is thinking of nominating, Dr Ahmad Sarari, Chairman MOPPAN, Hamisu Iyamtama, Salisu Officer, or any of Kannywood members that may be recommended and be accepted. He has tried Afakallah and Ismaila Afakallah, and his team have done their best, in repositioning the film industry in Kano State, hence the need to reorganise the Board and try a new management team. As the state government is daily receiving complaints from friends of the industry that some recent policies of the Afakallah-led management may create unemployment among youths in the state, by banning some films that have already engaged several artists to work for them.
