In a high profile crackdown of illegal hotels operating in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital a special taskforce comprising the ministries of lands, commerce and industries have sealed of 15 hotels in Birnin Kebbi.
Speaking in his office in Birnin Kebbi, the taskforce head who is also the permanent secretary ministry of lands and housing Alhaji Malami Shekare said that the affected hotels and guest inn are operating without licenses and building permit to build hotel structures. He alleged that the hoteliers converted residential buildings to hotels and guest inn habouring criminals, minors and married women are being smuggled in at night for commercial sex purposes.
He explained that, the taskforce acted based on complaints from the Gwandu emirate, Birnin Kebbi local government and neighbours of the now shut down hotels of allowing underage girls who are supposed to be in schools but are now into prostitution because an abode has been made available for their sex trades adding that commercial sex workers usually move with thieves and criminals.
Shekara stated that, already those places being operated as hotels and guest inn are officially residential areas therefore illegal as hotels.
The affected hotels and/or guest include Galaxy hotels located at Bayan tasha area in Birnin kebbi, Badariya guest inn know as (black gate) 1& 2, hotel regal suites 1, 2, 3 others are Madonna guest inn 1&2 , Destiny royals, Golden star guest inn behind hajj camp, well spring guest inn also behind hajj camp and paradise hotel Badariya all in Birnin Kebbi.
Owners of the affected hotels declined to speak on the matter when they were contacted.
