Nigerian leaders command respect abroad but face intimidation at home – First Lady Remi Tinubu

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has said that Nigerian leaders are often respected and treated with dignity internationally, but are frequently bullied and undermined within the country.

Mrs Tinubu made the remark while speaking at a public engagement, where she reflected on the contrast between how Nigerian leaders are perceived abroad and how they are treated domestically. According to her, Nigerian officials receive honour and courtesy when representing the country outside its borders, yet face hostility, ridicule and undue pressure at home.

She described the situation as troubling, noting that persistent attacks on leaders weaken national unity and undermine governance. The First Lady urged Nigerians to adopt a culture of constructive criticism rather than intimidation, stressing that disagreement should not translate into personal abuse or deliberate attempts to humiliate public office holders.

Mrs Tinubu also called on citizens to show greater respect for institutions and leadership, arguing that nations that make progress are those where leaders are held accountable without being stripped of dignity.

Her comments come amid intense political debates and rising public criticism of government officials across various platforms, particularly on social media.

The First Lady emphasised that patriotism requires supporting the country’s image both at home and abroad, adding that while leaders are not above scrutiny, Nigeria must not be its own enemy in the global space.
