Kwankwaso brands January 23 “Day of Betrayal” after Abba Yusuf dumps NNPP
Leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared January 23 as a “World Betrayal Day”, following the defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Kwankwaso made the declaration in a strongly worded statement, expressing deep disappointment over what he described as a betrayal of trust, loyalty, and the political movement that brought Governor Yusuf to power.
According to Kwankwaso, the decision by Abba Yusuf to exit the NNPP represents a significant setback not only for the party but also for millions of supporters who stood by the Kwankwasiyya ideology through years of political struggle.

“January 23 will be remembered globally as a day of betrayal,” Kwankwaso said, accusing unnamed political actors of engineering the defection for personal gain and undermining the collective sacrifices made by party faithful.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who recently announced his resignation from the NNPP, cited internal party crises and irreconcilable differences as reasons for his decision, stating that his move was in the best interest of governance and political stability in Kano State.
The development has deepened political tension within Kano and beyond, with NNPP supporters staging protests and party leaders holding emergency meetings to reassess their political strategy ahead of future elections.
Political analysts say the fallout could significantly reshape the political landscape of Kano State and influence alliances at the national level, especially as major parties position themselves for upcoming electoral contests.
