Kwara shuts schools in five LGAs due to insecurity

Story by Mercy Adaje

The Kwara State government has ordered the closure of schools in five local government areas within the Kwara South senatorial district following rising security concerns.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the government said the decision is a proactive step to ensure the safety of schoolchildren.

The affected LGAs are Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, and Oke Ero.

Olohungbebe explained that intelligence reports indicated that kidnappers fleeing intensified security operations might attempt to use schoolchildren as human shields. This prompted the immediate enforcement of the measure.

He added that boarding schools in Irepodun are also included due to their potential vulnerability.

“The measure may remain in place while awaiting further security clearance for normal activities to resume,” the statement said.
