Labourer arraigned for allegedly stealing electronics worth ₦1.1m

A 25-year-old labourer, Mohammed Haruna, was brought before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, facing charges of stealing electronic appliances valued at ₦1.1 million.
Haruna, a resident of Kinkinau in Kaduna, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
Prosecutor Insp. Chidi Leo informed the court that the offense was committed on August 6 in Rigasa, Kaduna. According to Leo, Haruna and two other individuals, who are still at large, entered the shop of the complainant, Garba Abubakar, through the ceiling and stole electronics worth ₦1.1 million.
“The defendant was sighted by a security guard in the process of stealing the appliances which led to his arrest while the others escaped,” the prosecutor stated.

Leo noted that the offense violates Sections 58 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. He added, “Section 217 stipulates seven years imprisonment for stealing if found guilty.”
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted Haruna bail in the amount of ₦500,000 with two reliable sureties, one of whom must be a community leader. The case has been adjourned until September 4 for a hearing.
