Lawmaker appeals as diarrhoea outbreak kills 7 people in Adamawa

The Deputy Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Muhammad Buba Jijjiwa, representing Jada/Mbulo, has made an urgent appeal to the state government and relevant agencies to tackle a severe outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting in his constituency, which has already resulted in seven fatalities.

During a session on Wednesday, Jijjiwa emphasised the escalating health crisis and cautioned that it could deteriorate further without swift action.

“If this situation is not promptly addressed, it could escalate into a larger public health disaster,” Jijjiwa cautioned.

He further urged the Adamawa State Ministry of Health to “provide essential medications and launch public awareness campaigns on hygiene to prevent further spread of the outbreak”.

Adamawa State has faced multiple outbreaks of diarrheal diseases in recent years, underscoring persistent public health challenges in the region.

In September 2021, the State Ministry of Health confirmed a cholera outbreak affecting 12 out of the state’s 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs). By September 2022, another cholera outbreak was reported, with 104 suspected cases across two LGAs.

In September 2024, the state experienced yet another cholera outbreak, resulting in 12 confirmed deaths and over 300 individuals hospitalised.

The affected LGAs included Yola North, Yola South, Girei, and Fufore, health officials attributed the outbreaks to factors such as flooding and poor hygiene practices.
