Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface sidelined with leg injury

Bayer Leverkusen and Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has been ruled out of action for “a few games” after suffering a leg injury during international duty.

Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, confirmed the development on Friday, expressing optimism about the striker’s recovery timeline.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga match against Heidenheim, Alonso said, “He’s got a small injury in his thigh muscle, it’s a shame. He won’t be there tomorrow or against Salzburg (Champions League).”

Despite initial fears that Boniface might be sidelined for the rest of 2024, Alonso remained hopeful. “We hope he will play again this year. We have to wait and see, but it’s not going to be six or eight weeks.”

With Boniface out, forward Patrik Schick, who has only started twice in the league this season, is expected to step up. Alonso remarked, “He is always ready — we don’t just need him now, but always.”

Leverkusen, currently fourth in the Bundesliga table, trail league leaders Bayern Munich by nine points. After an undefeated campaign last year that saw them claim a league and cup double, Alonso’s team has dropped 13 points so far this season, surpassing the 12 points they leaked throughout their entire previous campaign.

Boniface has been a key player for Leverkusen this season, scoring six goals and providing an assist in 10 league appearances. His absence will be a significant blow as the team fights to regain momentum in both domestic and European competitions.

The coach’s update offers some reassurance for fans as the club hopes for Boniface’s swift return to the pitch.
