Mainz lose appeal, ordered to pay El Ghazi €1.5m
Bundesliga side Mainz 05 have failed in their bid to overturn a court ruling that found the club guilty of unfairly dismissing former player Anwar El Ghazi.
The 30-year-old forward was sacked on November 3, 2023, after he made social media posts about the Israel-Gaza conflict. Mainz had initially suspended him in October 2023, calling his pro-Palestinian post “unacceptable.” The club later reinstated him, saying he had shown “remorse” and issued a warning.
But El Ghazi later posted that he did not “regret” or “distance himself” from his earlier comments, prompting Mainz to terminate his contract completely.

In July 2024, the Mainz Labour Court ruled that the dismissal was unlawful and ordered the club to pay €1.5million — the wages El Ghazi would have earned from November 2023 to July 2024.
With their appeal now rejected, Mainz must comply with the compensation ruling.
