Man kills neighbour while struggling for rice on New Year’s Day

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Daniel Onyejekwe, for allegedly stabbing his neighbour, identified only as Christian, to death during an argument over rice.

The tragic incident occurred on New Year’s Day in the Ogwanja area of Sapele, Delta State, following a dispute that escalated into a fatal confrontation.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, stated, “It is confirmed, and the suspect is in custody. The two were fighting and injured themselves badly. Unfortunately, the victim, Christian, died.”

Eyewitnesses reported that the altercation began while rice was being distributed along Boyo Road in Ogwanja. A heated argument broke out between Onyejekwe and the victim, leading to a physical fight.

An anonymous witness recounted, “Christian and Daniel started dragging the rice, and during the fight, Daniel picked a bottle and stabbed Christian multiple times. The vigilante rushed him to the hospital, but he was confirmed dead on arrival.”

The deceased’s body has been deposited at a mortuary, and the police have launched an investigation into the incident. SP Edafe assured the public that the suspect would face prosecution after the investigation is completed.
