Meet Dr. Hadiza Hamma: Yobe’s youngest professor and 1st Harvard graduate in Development Practice

Dr. Hadiza Hamma, a distinguished legal scholar and educator from Yobe State, Nigeria, has made remarkable strides in academia, legal practice, and global development. Her academic and professional journey reached a historic milestone when she became the first-ever graduate to receive a Master of Liberal Arts in Development Practice from Harvard University, graduating with distinction.

Her exceptional contributions were recognised with the prestigious Dean’s Prize for Outstanding Development Practice Capstone, a global honour that came with financial reward, acknowledging her innovative approach to addressing complex global development issues.

Journey of Excellence

Dr. Hamma’s pursuit of academic excellence began when she was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2006, following the completion of her LL.B and LL.M in Law. Her academic journey did not stop there, as she went on to earn a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Abuja. Specializing in areas such as Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, Sustainable Development Law, and International Development Law, Dr. Hamma has developed a profound understanding of critical legal frameworks essential for global development.

With over 14 years of experience in academia, Dr. Hamma has contributed to the development of future legal minds, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is not only a passionate educator but also a visionary leader, having introduced the International Development Law and Policy course into the postgraduate programme at the University of Abuja.

Leadership in Academic Innovation

As the Director of the Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR) at the University of Abuja, Dr. Hamma has redefined teaching and research methodologies. Over the past three years, she has overseen the training of hundreds of academic staff in the use of technology for education, revolutionising the way knowledge is imparted in the Nigerian educational system. Through the organisation of workshops and seminars, she has significantly enhanced the teaching and research capabilities of her colleagues.

Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Hamma has been a Senior Associate and Head of Human Rights and Advocacy at Bahama Chambers in Abuja, where she has actively pursued justice and human rights advocacy. Her legal work aligns closely with her passion for community development and youth empowerment, with a special focus on sustainability and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
