Military imposes drone operation ban in North East
The Joint Task Force (JTF) of Operation Hadin Kai in the North East has imposed a ban on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, in the region.
The directive, issued by the Air Component Commander, Air Commodore U U. Idris, highlights growing security concerns associated with drone use in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.
The statement, underscores that both government agencies and private individuals have been operating drones without prior approval from the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai.
According to the statement, the increasing proliferation of drones for both domestic and commercial purposes has raised significant security alarms. The primary concern is the potential use of these drones by non-state actors and criminal groups for malicious or offensive activities. Additionally, the operation of drones by government entities and private individuals without adhering to proper regulations is seen as a major risk.
“More worrisome is the fact that non-state actors have effectively utilized drones to target military installations and Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), as observed in other regions. There have been recent reports of unauthorized drone activities in the region, including an incident on January 7, 2025, where a drone was found onboard a passenger flight from Maiduguri to Monguno during a routine search at a helipad. The drone was seized, and an investigation is currently underway,” the statement reads.
The Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai is tasked with overseeing and regulating all aerial operations, including those involving drones, within the North East Theatre.
This responsibility aims to ensure the safety and security of all airspace operators in the region. Consequently, the statement reinforces the necessity of complying with the ban on drone operations in the Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa airspace.
The statement also warns that any violation of this directive, regardless of its scale, will be treated with utmost seriousness. All operators are urged to adhere strictly to the regulations in the interest of regional safety and security.
