Minister declares 8th National Youth Games open in Asaba

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, officially opened the 8th edition of the National Youth Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, today.

In his address, Enoh highlighted the crucial role of grassroots sports in nurturing young talent and strengthening Nigeria’s global standing in athletics.

Speaking to a gathering of young athletes and officials from across the country, the minister underscored the importance of the Games in fostering national unity and developing future champions.

He emphasised that the event provides a vital platform for identifying and nurturing talent that will contribute to the growth of the sports industry.

“Sports are not just a means of entertainment,” Enoh said. “They play an essential role in wealth creation, promoting peace, fostering unity, and enhancing diplomacy.

This is why the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to repositioning the sector in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, the minister called for a renewed focus on grassroots development, pushing for a comprehensive framework that goes beyond talent identification.

Enoh praised Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his support in hosting the Games despite challenges, and expressed his gratitude to the governors of the participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their support.

With a record number of 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials participating, this year’s National Youth Games is set to be historic. Enoh urged all athletes to uphold the spirit of fair play and compete with integrity as they aim to become the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions.
