Minister of Power assures Nigerians of grid recovery within two days
The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that the recent disruption in electricity supply is temporary and will be resolved within 24 to 48 hours.
Speaking on Tuesday, Adelabu said steps are already being taken to stabilise the national grid and restore power supply across the country following a decline in generation capacity. The drop in electricity availability was triggered by an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline, worsened by acts of vandalism on key gas infrastructure, which cut gas supply to several thermal power plants.
According to PUNCH Online, the incident led to reduced output at multiple gas-fired power stations, resulting in a nationwide shortfall in electricity supply.
The Minister’s assurance followed a statement from the National Independent System Operator (NISO), which said it is closely monitoring repair works being carried out by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
NISO confirmed that the pipeline explosion significantly affected power generation but noted that NGPTC has assured the sector that restoration works are nearing completion, with full operations expected to resume within 24 to 48 hours.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu acknowledged the inconvenience faced by households and businesses, stressing that the disruption was caused by temporary gas supply constraints affecting several thermal generation stations.
The minister reiterated his assurance during a meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, with key stakeholders in the power sector, including NISO, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, the Ministry of Power, power generation companies and distribution companies.
With electricity demand typically rising during the Yuletide season, Adelabu emphasised the urgency of restoring gas supply and boosting generation capacity. Stakeholders at the meeting confirmed that repairs to the vandalised pipelines would be completed within the stated timeframe, while the minister directed all relevant agencies to intensify efforts to ensure power supply is fully restored as scheduled.
