MURIC accuses media of ignoring Muslims in ‘Christian Genocide’ debate

Story by Susan Mbamah

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has criticized the media for sidelining the plight of Muslims in discussions surrounding the so called “Christian genocide” debate in Nigeria.

In a statement, the advocacy group argued that national and international media outlets often frame violent incidents as exclusively targeting Christians, while attacks on Muslim communities receive comparatively little attention. MURIC said this imbalance fosters misconceptions about the country’s security situation and undermines efforts to address violence against all religious groups.

The group urged journalists and media houses to adopt more inclusive reporting practices that reflect the experiences of both Muslims and Christians affected by banditry, herder-farmer clashes, and other security challenges. MURIC emphasized that recognizing all victims of violence is essential for promoting national cohesion and justice.

It called on the government, security agencies, and civil society organizations to ensure equal protection for all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation, while advocating for accurate and unbiased media coverage of communal conflicts.
