The Islamic world has been thrown into mourning following the death of Sheikh Nurayn Muhammad, one of the world’s most popular Qur’an reciters.

Shaykh Nurayn Muhammad Siddiq sadly passed away through a car accident 18 km from Omdurman, on his way back from Wadi Halfa in the Northern State, when he was going to preach alongside some other Huffadh (Qur’an memorisers) in Sudan.

Confirming the loss, the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments in Sudan, Nasreddin Mufreh, via a post on his Facebook page, said that he was distressed by the departure of Sheikh Nurayn following a traffic accident, and pointed to the death of 3 others who were with him: Ali Yaqoub, Abdullah Awad Al-Karim and Muhannad Al-Kinani, while Sayed bin Omar is receiving treatment.

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti), Vice Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, expressed his condolences on the death of Nurayn, also via a Facebook post adding that the traffic accident occurred to the Sheikh “while he was on his way back from a missionary trip.”

Nurayn began to memorize the Qur’an at the hands of the sheikhs of Kataeb in the Bara region of North Kordofan state in the mid-nineties.

He was famous among other Sudanese reciters for reciting the Holy Quran with multiple narrations.

He was famous for his recitation of the Noble Qur’an in a revered voice that attracted thousands of worshipers to him during the month of Ramadan, and he became the imam of the most famous mosques in the capital, Khartoum.

Nurayn’s recitation is echoed in public transport vehicles, private cars, the Holy Quran radio, and in markets and shops in and outside Sudan.

On behalf of Sudan, he participated in several international competitions, most notably Malaysia and Dubai, where he won its third international prize in the Holy Quran during competition with 83 countries.
