Political expediency often guides decision-making. This commonly results in political leaders resorting to the utilisation of religion as a means to manipulate and silence the masses, preventing them from openly discussing crucial issues.
It is crucial for us to confront and acknowledge the uncomfortable reality of religion being exploited for control and deception. Turning a blind eye to the misuse of religion only serves to erode our fundamental beliefs and values.
The complicity of elders, ulemas, traditional rulers, and political figures in such manipulative tactics cannot be overlooked. They often take advantage of the ignorance of the public for their personal benefit.
In a compelling article penned by Tukur Faru titled “Muslims Without Islam: Northern Governors Fund Pilgrimage While Millions Suffer,”several critical concerns were brought to the forefront.
One significant issue raised was the apparent preference of Northern Nigeria’s governors to allocate funds for extravagant pilgrimages over addressing the prevalent poverty, insecurity, and lack of essential services in the region. This misallocation of resources directly contradicts the core Islamic principles of accountability, fairness, and empathy.

It is essential to reflect on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) who prioritized the welfare of the less fortunate. The current governance in Northern Nigeria has faced criticism for emphasizing ostentatious religious displays in Mecca while neglecting the pressing needs of the population. This discrepancy has resulted in a leadership vacuum where genuine Islamic values are conspicuously absent.
The clarion call for action is resoundingly clear – the ulema must step in to address this urgent situation. As astutely highlighted by Tukur Faru, “It is time Northern governors are reminded that the true pilgrimage is not one that begins at the airport, but the one that starts with justice, ends with equity, and is guided by service.”
The populace deserves leaders who uphold these principles as mandated by Islam. Only through a collective commitment to authentic values can we navigate our society towards a future characterized by justice and equity.
